What is the assurance that you are going to make it among the numerous musicians we have in Nigeria? There is really no guarantee about anything. Life is not certain but I believe in God and He will see me through. Why music? I love singing and writing songs. When did you start music? It was in the UK. I formed a group, Golden Girl, with my friends and I was the lead singer. My musical career kicked off officially in the late 1990s and in Nigeria, by 2005. Tell me more about yourself? My name is Susan. I was born and brought up in Lagos. I went to Greenspring Nursery and Primary School, St. John Secondary School and thereafter to the University of Sunderland in the UK. I have a B.A. Honours in Business Management. Why are you throwing away a B.A. Honours for music? I am not. I’ll use my knowledge to sell more records, and music is business. When did you come back to Nigeria? Early 2001. What did you do between 2001 and 2005? I started a company, Date Reminder Service, and I formed an organisation with my business partner and we’ve been building telecommunications masts for companies. What kind of music do you play? I’m an R ‘n’ B artiste, and I’m inspired by life experiences and love. Does that mean we might not get to see lots of butt shaking, boob swinging stuff in your album? Most of my songs are not about that but in the first one, ‘Komole’, you get to see a lot of that because you want people to be happy and dance. So, they have to break it down and party. What has been the reception so far? It has been more than I hoped for. People have reacted positively to my music. Are you on any record label? I’m part of a record label called Beatmap. We are young, upcoming, and happy. We have talent and most importantly, we have God. Do you think that label can market you globally? I believe I can market myself in a more businesslike way. Can your degree qualification effectively tackle the challenges of Nigeria’s peculiar business environment? We have to use logic; everything is not about degrees. Give me instances when life has been fair to you. The fact that I didn’t carry-over any of my courses throughout my undergraduate days, means life has been fair to me. I have a car; I’m able o support myself; I have two legs and a butt to shake: life has been fair to me. What about when life has not been fair to you? You know there are times when things do not go the way we want. But I’m a very positive person; I can’t remember any negative thing. Not even one? Well, there was a time I saw the picture of a girl on my boyfriend’s phone and they were on his bed. What did you do? I was upset; but I didn’t break anything. (laughter) Did the relationship continue? We would see. So, it’s still fresh? Only God knows what will happen; men will always be men. I think women have to be patient and work for their relationships. How many relationships have you worked at? I’ve worked on quite a number of relationships. You go into a relationship, hoping to make it work but when the other partner is playing games, you have no choice. How old are you by the way? I’m in my mid 20s. So how many relationships have you worked at? I’ve worked for every relationship I’ve been in. I don’t keep tabs on my relationship. What will make you say yes to a man? Confidence. You have to be a gentleman, polite, understanding, and must have a sense of humour because I’m a prank star. I think I have all those qualities. Do you? Let’s wait till after the interview; that is, if my boyfriend would not have killed you. I thought you were on a break? But you know how it is in a relationship. If a guy does it, it is normal; but if a girl does it, she is in big soup. That means you have forgiven him? I have already forgiven him but can I forget? That means you are back in each other’s arms? I don’t want to talk about it again. What does love mean to you? It is about treating everybody the way you want to be treated. If I love you, I will not want to hurt you. It is about accommodating people for who they are. How many times have you fallen in love? I love everybody. That is not the kind of love I am talking about. Define falling in love because I treat everybody the way I would love to be treated. The kind of love that makes something happen behind closed doors. I’m sure that doesn’t happen with everybody, or does it? You are a naughty boy (laughs). I love the man in my life. For how long have you been together? Quite a while. Is marriage in the picture? Man proposes; God disposes. Has your heart been broken before? No, my heart has not been broken before. How many times have you broken hearts? I try to let people down nicely. So how many times have you let them down? I can’t remember. Do you live alone? Yes. How many times do guys sneak into your room at night? Guys don’t sneak into my room at night. I’ve never had a guy sleep on my bed. What about your couch or rug? Men do not sleep in my house; it is not good to have men come over to your house if you are not yet married. But the rumour mill has it that you have a ‘sugar daddy’ that picks your bills? It is the same - the rumour that say I’m sleeping with OJB Jezreel and that I even bought him a car; that he is not just my producer. Between you and I, have you seen OJB’s underwears before? No, I have not seen OJB’s underwears before nor would he want me to. When will you get married? When God wants it. Is it to the same guy that had a lady on his bed? I don’t want to talk about marriage. When was the first time you kissed? Mum gave me a kiss when I passed my common entrance. I mean with a guy. That was when I was 16; it was with a guy who had been asking me out for a while. He pecked me during an end of year party dance. What does sex mean to you? It’s a way of communicating between two partners who want to have physical communication. How often do you do the physical communication? I am not going to answer that; it is too personal. That isn’t so personal. What about you? Unfortunately I’m a virgin so there is not much to say. I am a virgin too. The roof is caving in. (Laughter) what do you mean, why can’t I be a virgin? What will it take to get you on the bed? I think I have to like and be connected to the person on a spiritual level. There has to be emotional connection. I have to be comfortable with you. So, if I don’t like you and I’m not comfortable with you and there is no connection, then there is no bed. How can I make that connection? Fast and pray to God (laughter). Would you have loved to wait for marriage before sex? I don’t know. I think every man wants an experienced person. Even if he marries you because you are naÔve, there is the tendency that he will still go and look for the experienced ones. I don’t know, a lot of water has passed under the bridge. Did you say a lot of water? Maybe a cup. For how long have you been gathering experience? I don’t know, I was an adult before I did such. What was your first time like? It was painful and horrible. After my first time I did not have sex for a year. Where will you be in three years time? I would be up there and would have won numerous awards. And would like to be married. |
